Hey Guys,
When i bought the gtx 780 in january, it was pretty much maxing out every game in the highest settings, unfortunately, watch_dogs came and crushed my bubble. I couldn't run full spec, had to cut down on multiple settings just to get an fps between 40-50. On ultra textures, the fps dropped to 0 at times, i am almost sure its the 3gb vram. I want to play with everything on max, now and in the foreseeable future. I haven't even finished watch dogs just because i wanna play it properly, the way its meant to be played.
The rumours suggest that the new series of Nvidia, particularly the 880 will have 8gb vram, from what i ve learned, the next gen games will require a lot of vram for textures etc, also read somewhere that the games are being made for the next gen consoles which have 8 gig ram.
Can someone please tell me if selling my 780 and waiting for the 8 series makes sense or not.
GTA V and Farcry 4 will definitely be as heavy or maybe more than watch dogs, i want to run them full spec as well.
Thanks
D

I'd hang in there with it. Meanwhile Watch Dogs will be working on a LOT of game optimising projects. Maybe by the time the 8 series are available, you'll be thinking 'Hey this 780 aint so bad after all"

But what about the future titles, you think i'll be able to play gta V, FC4 properly with 3 gig of vram?

I have the same card and have yet to play a game it can't max. Maybe not max AA in all titles but everything else and with AA of some sort. I would wait. Watch Dogs is not very well optimized from what I understand and newer drivers and game patches may make it feel like a new game soon. It's an apples to oranges comparison to say consoles have 8GB. The 2 can't be directly compared.

Just curious as I have about 50 pages of PMs and it would take forever to look but did we have a long PM chat about a year ago? Name looks very familiar.

Yes we did, a couple of long ones. I bought the card by your recommendation only, i am the guy from India ;)
Getting back to the subject, you think the card will be good for the future games? Wouldn't the vram matter? AMD is already out with 4gbs.

I thought so :)

Yeah AMD has 4GB cards and AMD cards generally do better at very high resolutions. At 1920 x 1080 though the 780 should be a very good card for a long time to come. I would not judge the 780 based on one game though. And from the way the GTX 750/750 Ti cards look, Maxwell will be very good so it should be worth waiting on.

Did I have my 780 when we chatted before? I have been nothing but impressed with mine.

The whole thing comes down to either continue using the card or sell it at a good price and continue saving till the maxwell cards come out and get the best of it. As it is, the next good game for me comes out in September.

The real question is when are the new cards coming out. I have read that they are having issues with the 20nm fabrication process so there could always be delays. Besides you can always be waiting for the latest and greatest or you can enjoy what you have now. There are so many good games out there I could never be without a card for that long myself!

So in an attempt to try and run all games in the foreseeable future should i get the 6gb version of the gtx 780? Or get a 780 ti or maybe just wait till the heavy games come along and SLI my 780?

Hi,

I would say keep the 780 at the moment if you are only planning to game at 1080p. If you are planning later to game at 1440p maybe you can think of getting another 780 and go sli. If that is not fast enough go 3way.
All new games esp Watch dogs will need some time for them to mature.

Even running quadfire, still stuttering at 4k. All to do with drivers and game optimisation.
Hope things will improve.
