So I have a home stereo system that puts out 80w per port. I'm also buying 4000w subs. Will this mean it will be super quiet or give no bass? I want to shake the whole house. Will I need to buy a new receiver?

Solution
the outputs on the regular speakers have nothing to do with the sub.its the sub out on your amp that matters.check your receiver specs to see what wattage your sub out is rated at.then check your subs minimum power specs.as long as your amp puts out at least the minimum wattage required by your sub you should be all right.by the way,ive never heard of a 4000w sub for home use.

thanks for the info yea I have a Yamaha natural sound av receiver htr-5450 and an American bass 4000w car sub I was hoping use it inside on my stereo

that receiver will have enough power for the sub.all 4000w means is that that is the maximum wattage that it will handle.the minimum power requirement is the important one.if the sub output from the amp matches the input on the sub ie uses the same cable you should be ok.i assume its a powered sub? the only problem i can see is if the voltage requirements are different from automotive (12v) to your amp.check your amps specs for voltage output to the sub.

You will balance the level of the sub from the receiver so it matches the level of the other speakers. The sub amp will determine maximum volume so it will have to be able to drive the sub loud enough for a room not the interior of a car. If it is a car amp you will also need a large enough 12v power supply to allow the amp to put out full power. The box that the sub is in will also determine the efficiency (more efficient means more volume for less power).
