Hi all,

As above, the 4690k comes out today.

Would you go for the 4690 standard or go for the k unlocked? Theres about 30/40 difference in them price wise.

Not sure if the overclock is so necessary? Im going to be SLIing x2 760s.

What do people think?

Solution

Choice is up to you whether or not you want to overclock or plan to. Don't plan too far ahead because most people invest in a k-series CPU in hopes of overclocking in the future, but ends up replacing the CPU with a better one. So just give it a thought and go with whichever you think works for you for the time being. Also account for how long you plan to stick with the CPU before the next upgrade.

Also, it's not just the extra cost of the CPU, but you will also need an aftermarket heatsink for overclocking. The stock cooler will not be sufficient. Also, you PSU will also need to be adequate.

Ill be going for the new Asus Sabertooth z79 motherboard so it will support all the gimmicks and SLI etc.

That is a high end mobo you gotta match that with your CPU. i5-4690k and some excellent cooling like a Corsair H100i.

Good point. No point in getting a board with lots of overclocking features unless you will OC the CPU. Don't be afraid of overclocking, it's easy enough to do, the need for it isn't as great as it used to be when CPUs were limiting game performance but the extra speed still affects other operations and will probably be felt in some games too over time.
