amd fx 6300 is there a catch

Solution

If gaming is your main concern, then the i3-4130.
If professional tasks and editing are your main concern, FX-6300.
As you do a little bit of everything (previously I was expecting mostly gaming), then you could pick either CPU.

AMD chips are not as efficient as Intel chips, from a gaming perspective the 6300 is roughly comparable to an i3, but uses more power and hence runs hotter. If you are looking for multi-threaded performance AMD chips have more cores so have a chance but generally are still out performed by i5 and i7's, this is one of the reasons that AMD is focusing more on their lower end chip market as they are still competitive in this area

AMD chips are best for gaming on single graphic card with multi threaded performance. Intel are very pricey and great for single threads and able to maximize 4 cards with great performance. So it varies on power consumption

Yes.
The FX-6300 uses a less advanced architecture using modular cores. All the FX CPUs do. It severely weakens their performance and requires a lot more power consumption.
In fact, the i3-4150 outperforms the FX-6300 in many games.

Doesn't matter. The Ghz is a simple advertising stat. There are far more important things to CPU performance, and overall an i3 is better.

Look at it this way. If a large man throws a baseball, he can toss it lightly and it'll go a long distance. If a small boy throws a baseball, he'll have to throw it really hard to even come close to the man's light toss. The FX-6300 is the boy, the i3 is the man, and the Ghz is how hard they work to throw the ball. The i3 uses a much more robust and stronger architecture, and can do a lot more at lower Ghz than the AMD FX series.

If you'd like me to post gameplay test scores of the i3-4130 beating the FX-6300 to prove it, I can.

And the little boy was given drugs to make himself strong for free to hit harder without paying for a 500$ workout session.

Overclocking isn't free. In order to OC an FX-6300 high enough to beat an i3-4130, it'd need a more expensive motherboard and a more expensive aftermarket cooler, which would raise the price by nearly enough to justify an i5, certainly a lot more expensive than an i3.

Plus, AMD builds already need more expensive power supplies.

It makes a difference if you do a lot of rendering, compression files, editing or streaming games. New mantle and games are taking advantage of all the cores as of late.

Bought an Gigabyte 970A UD3P on may 21st for 55$ and it overclocks my old amd 1055T to 3.7GHZ no problem. idles at 36C and 46 during load on hyper 212 evo. Sounds like a steal to me i mean intel is great i was close to trying them out since last time i owned an intel in 2002. Was gonna try I3 3220 for 129$ and a motherboard for 140$ till the prices scared me off. Maybe in 20 years ill buy an intel when prices are reasonable

Both processors are great but if your tight on money the fx processor would be great

But is there a large enough difference between the two, that is noticeable, like in gaming, honestly 25-30 fps on lowest is chilled with me,but like is there a large gap between the two

You can get a stable Intel motherboard for ~$60.
Additionally, the 1055T from years back still performs almost as well as FX-6300 with both on stock clocks. Yours at 3.7Ghz would be far ahead of an FX-6300. Maybe you just haven't kept up to date with AMD's decline?

Either of them will manage high framerates at ultra settings in most games. And the gap isn't that large, on average.

I tend not to trust Game Debate very much. They look a lot at artificial scores, and mostly ignore real game performance.

However, both the i3-4130 and the FX-6300 will play all games.
