Hey in windows 8.1 I had the option to use "BitLocker" to password encrypt an entire drive however i wanted to protect just one folder (its a zip folder) - I have managed to achieve this with 7-zip and it works fine in all respects except one...

I want the file to prompt the user EVERY time he/she opens the folder - not just once until they restart their PC. From the looks of things, all encryption programs do this.. therefore windows must be keeping a temp file for storing the key... I just don't want it to save the key once the folder has closed... Any tips?

Try with WinZip and password-protected file. When you open the file from within the archive, user will be asked for password. Work with the file as long as necessary, update it. WinZip will ask whether to update the copy. Once done, next time the password will be asked again.

Not the perfect solution, but will work. Your other option is to use TrueCrypt, and set it up to dismount the volume, but it is much more troubles and user training.
It's saved in RAM, which is generally pretty hard to get to. Not impossible, but difficult. Any access to any file, read or write, requires the key.

I think some utilities have an option to automatically dismount the volume after a particular period of time, but this would cause trouble with saving because it would tend to display a file not found message rather than please input key.
