Hey guys,

I'm building a PC for my office. Its primary use will be CAD. This is what I've come up with so far, but I'd like to see if I can get a cheaper solution without sacrificing performance.

The CPU and SSD are not optional without thorough documentation.

CPU:
Intel Core i7-4820K - 3.7 GHz - LGA2011

Cooler:
Cooler Master Hyper 412S

Mobo:
Asus P9X79 - LGA2011

RAM:
Corsair Vengeance Low Profile Dual Chanel DDR3-1600 - 8GB (2x4GB)

Graphics:
Asus GeForce GTX 750 Ti OC, 2GB GDDR5

Storage:
Samsung 840 EVO SSD - 500GB

Optical drive:
Asus DRW-24F1ST - DVD Burner / Drive

Tower:
Corsair Carbide 200R

PSU:
Corsair CX430M - 430W

I'd really appreciate any help.

-Kenneth

Solution
I'm not trying to convince you of anything. I merely suggested a GPU designed to work with CAD software instead of a gaming GPU. I believe you will regret going with only 8GB of RAM. Here is another build suggestion.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4820K 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor ($319.98 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 ATX LGA2011 Motherboard ($219.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($139.50 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB 2.5" Solid State...
I would stick with the LGA 1150 platform since you aren't using any of the benefits of LGA 2011 like quad-channel RAM. I put this build together that offers a top-end LGA 1150 i7 chip, 16GB of RAM, your 500GB SSD, a GPU designed for CAD type workloads, and a high quality PSU.

I am using Altium, but I am doing rather large projects, so the system requirements doesn't say much.

I intend to change the processor to a 6 core 12 thread processor. I believe I need LGA2011 for that.

I'm not convinced that this card will be able to keep up when using CAD.

Unusually, gaming cards are recommended for Altium over workstation class graphics cards, so you can't really go wrong - buy the most powerful GeForce you fell you will need for your projects.

As for getting a 6-core, I recommend the 4930K (I have one, overclocked, with which I do 3D rendering etc) - but check that Altium will make use of all the cores - many CAD programs don't/won't
