Hi, I currently have an i7-3770. I'm building a 2nd, cheap system purely for media playing and downloading. I was originally going to buy a bog-standard mobo and CPU for it but now I'm thinking of using my current gaming rigs mobo in the new system and using the opportunity to upgrade my gaming rig.

My question is do I carry on using the i7-3770 in my gaming rig and buy another, better, Z77 gaming mobo and buy a basic CPU for my 2nd comp (Dual Core Pentuim or something)? Or do I put the i7-3770 in my 2nd comp and buy an i5-4670K with a shiny new Z97 board (Asus Z97-A S1150 Intel Z97)?

Would I notice a increase in system performance if I went for the Z97 mobo and an i5, or should I just buy a better Z77 gaming board and stick with the i7?

All my other components in my gaming rig are staying the same

Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X 4GB (xfiring down the line, which is why I need a new mobo)
16GB DDR3 1600Mhz (x4 4GB)
1200w PSU

Cheers :)

Well................. the 3770 is still an awesome CPU. The question is more about what to do with the R9. If you're going to need a new mobo then that's what you have to do and answers your question as long as money is of no consequence.

I've gone through being frugal and dropping all kinds of cash on components. Now I try to stay balanced so my advice would be is get a mobo that supports your current cpu and handles what you need to do GPU-wise. For media playing and downloading get something cheap for that use only. A 3770 for downloading is pure overkill.

Yeah sorry, just re-read what I wrote and didn't really explain myself very well ! Apologies. I'm definitely getting a new mobo as my current Z77 only offers x4/x4 in Xfire. Just wasn't sure if spending an extra £100 and getting a new Z97 and compatible CPU would be worth it or not.

Cheers though, I think I'll just get a new Z77 and stick witht he 3770 and put my current Z77 in my 2nd comp and buy a good old Pentium for £40 ha :)

The per core speed of the i5-4690K will be considerably better than your 3770. Particularly with a conservative overclock.

My advice would be to sell your 3770 on ebay; it will fetch near $200.
Buy the z97 sli capable motherboard you want.

Use your z77 motherboard for the second pc. Buy a dual core cpu to put in it.
New or used, you can budget $75 or so
