What's the power requirement for running 2 r9-280x gpus? I currently have a corsair 850 w psu

850W is sufficient. Which Corsair PSU? TX? HX?

The two GPUs will require 500 watts themselves; to give you a complete answer (as to whether you need to upgrade your PSU) we need more info, as in, what else is in your rig. I would expect the 350 watts you have left to be able to cover the draw from the CPU, HDDs, fans, optical drive, etc, but maybe if you're running a crazy rig with like 5 HDDs in raid and tons of other power hungry stuff, its not.

Also, not all 850 watt PSUs have the connectors to run two power hungry cards like that. I don't know offhand, but I would expect a Corsair to have the right connectors.

850 watt is fine.

280x is a 200 watt average...250 watt max card...500watts for your cards and 200 watts for the rest of your system...you could get away with a high quality 750 watt.

my system consist of fx 8350, gigabyte fxx990, 8 gig 2166 ripjaw ram, 2 samsung 250 g ssd, dvd, card reader, fans. i think the psu is a tx850.
