Alright, well I'm in the market for a new laptop.

That being said, I narrowed it down to only the MacBooks.
Also, no need for flaming, as I am no fan boy and understand for the same money I will have a monster of a laptop but I fell in love with the OS Macs have. Won't be getting it until Yosemite comes out but I am stuck between the 13" Air and the 13" macbook pro

The barebone $999 13" Air with the 128GB flash drive specs:
CPU
1.4GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz
1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz [Add $150.00]

RAM
4GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
8GB 1600MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM [Add $100.00]

which would finalize the purchase at a max of $1249
I'd Opt in for the extra ram and the i7 for a slight future proof

The barebone $1299 13" Macbook pro (with retina)
CPU
2.4GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
2.6GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz (+$100.00 option)
2.8GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz (+$300.00 option)

RAM
4GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
8GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM [Add $100.00]
16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM [Add $300.00]

For this I'd just upgrade to the 8GB ram and would total $1399

This would only be used for itunes, email, surfing the web.
Zero gaming or anything graphic intense.

What do you guys think?

True, but I would also like to try to future proof it. Not saying it'll last me 10 years but at least 5 and run everything correctly. (Guess it comes down to how long the hardware lasts) But since there isn't much of a price difference between them two, would the smarter thing to do be to spend the extra $150 and get the Pro?

or if the 1.4GHz i5 is that inferior to the 1.7GHz i7

yeah its worth it to get the pro and get the i7 also but really i would try to sway you away from buying this and build yourself a computer really with $1200 dollars you could build a beast gaming rig and since your only going on the net the computer would last you at least 6 years if you mantain it

I'm not trying to build any gaming rig. I've built a few already and I am more console anyway. As I said above, I will not be doing ANY type of gaming on this thing. ONLY email/web/youtube/itunes etc. I'm not new to pc's/building. Last pc i had I spent 3k on. I'm set on Apple, and my only questions are if it is worth getting the i7 and the 8gb ram on the air, or spend 150 extra for the MBP with just a ram upgrade.

I'd also like to add, I have an acer aspire for the last 4-5 years that I bought new for $320 and it's still working just as it did the day I bought it. Don't need to build a "beast gaming rig" to last me 5+ years

I think it really depends on the weight, most people get the Air for the purpose of being a light and extremely portable laptop. I completely recommend the Air if you DON'T plan on doing anything CPU intensive.

Additionally, the MBP has the retina display so the screen resolution will be dramatically different in terms of clarity and quality. I guess the real question comes down too ... do you want an extremely light device or a beautiful display? (The MBP isn't too much heavier though)

Just my two cents :) in terms of performance, they're both fairly similar.
