Number of ram in this motherboard.

Basic question really. I have a Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-D3H Motherboard (DDR3, Socket FM2+, PCI Express 3.0). Can I stick one lone 8gb stick on the motherboard and leave the other empty for if i have to money in the future to put another 8gb stick in or do I have to have a 2x4gb set up?

The reason for buying a kit as 2x4GB is because they are tested and are meant to be ran in dual channel configuration. You can buy another 1x8GB later, which would give you 16GB by the way, but because you bought them individually as tested use in single channel, they are not guaranteed to work together in dual channel. The most common way would be to plug them in and see if it works.

Wait, doesn't that motherboard have 4 RAM slots though? So you could get 2x4 GB, and still have space to increase the RAM capacity later.

Edit: also, ksham is absolutely right.

Hmm, it may be down to a typo on the OP's original post. The GA-F2A88XM-D3H mentioned in the original post has 4 slots, but the similarly named GA-F2A88XM-HD3 only has 2.

So perhaps it was just a typo in the first post?
