Building a new PC and can't decide between these two cards:

MSI

and

Sapphire:

The Sapphire card will cost me $80 more. I'd like good performance and a quiet gpu. I will mostly be gaming/using the pc at 2560x1440.

Which one is the better purchase? Any other 780- or 290x-cards in the same price range (about $500) that is better?

The R9 290X will be more better for 1440p gaming overall.
But if you use any Nvidia features like Shadowplay, Physx then a GTX 780 is your option.

What kind of case? Ventilation might matter since the ATI cards are hotter. I have no experience with the 290x.

I own the ASUS DC OC II GTX 780. The GTX 780 is quite overclockable. I keep a mild overclock (+120mhz) on and it boosts to 1100mhz pretty regularly during 1440p gaming. Thats a good price on the MSI.

Anandtech's bench is another good comparison using real-world comparisons: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1056?vs=1036 You can see in the screen resolutions where the VRAM matters and where it doesn't.
