i am having dell inspiron n5110 laptop. my right side and rear usb 3.0 ports are not working...they seems all dead. i format windows 3 times ...first win 7 then again win 7 64 bit...now win 8.1 pro.....still the problem remains to be same...i contacted dell...they are asking me to see a local technician coz dell diagnostic utility shows no problem with hardware...i tried updating drivers. i tried power management..i tried uninstalling usb controllers from device manager and then rebooting...still problem remains same...i did rerest bios to default after problem even then nothing changed. usb is enabled in bios...also after installing renseas 3.0 drivers or nec 3.0 drivers it tells USB 3.0 host controller not found...i tried fresco logic usb 3.0 drivers too....please help...i spent my hours and hours...

well i also happened to have a dell inspiron 15R and my problem is exactly the same like yours, 3.0 were working and all of a sudden botth stopped.
I also tried everything drivers , windows reinstall, device check but problem still persists.
Also when i connect some device like mobile to 3.0 usb then mobile starts charging as if it is connected but no response on computer.
If you find the solution please reply!!!

Gentlemen. I've had this exact problem for over a year and a half now after owning my laptop for nearly four years now. I can assure you, there is no solution. I take it your ports can still provide power to a usb device, such as a cooling pad or usb powered headphones? Other than that, these ports are dead. I've scoured the internet multiple times, read every forum post, tried every driver, reinstalled Windows 7, tried Windows 8, went back to 7, opened up my case to check for anything broken, and run every diagnostic. Nothing has worked. It simply is a hardware failure.

For anyone in the future who googles "Inspiron 15R (or N5110) USB 3.0 not working/showing error in device manager/only providing usb power" and stumbles upon this thread, let me be the doomsayer in that there is no solution besides replacing your laptop's motherboard, which will run you at the time of this post a little over $100.

I also had a problem with my usb3.0 ports in my case on windows usb devices didnt connect ,although connecting phone showed connections on phones end but nothing on laptop ,however i was also dual-booting ubuntu and ports worked on it( so at least hardware was alive ) ,
after everything else failed i noticed some bluetooth peripheral devices had driver problems,so i went and removed them ,and my usb ports are
alive again (no idea how the hell it woks though)
might just be some crazy individual case

@LaurisM: Thanks for providing some hope. Please explain how exactly your removed bluetooth peripheral devices? Your ports started working on Windows or Ubuntu? Please provide some details.
