Hi,
Today, I decided to temporarily connect a second monitor to my Windows 8.1 desktop, when the system started messing up. First, the main display (screen 1) got switched off, and the second monitor (screen 2) became the primary and only monitor detected, despite the fact that screen 1 was still connected! I then used 'detect displays', and the computer found screen 1 as 'mobile PC display', so I tried to enable it, but nothing worked except screen 2.
So then I unplugged screen 2, and the input switched back to screen 1, except that all that displayed was a grey screen (my theme color). So using the power button (I programmed it to switch of the computer normally when pushed, I turned it off. When I turn my computer back on, it booted up, however, instead of say 'starting Windows' on a grey background, it just displayed the grey background.
When it loaded, my background image and taskbar are the only things displayed. No clock. No cursor. No WiFi, or message center status icons or even desktop shortcuts. Just the taskbar and background image. The computer doesn't respond to the Windows key, or any key for that matter, and I don't know about the mouse because the cursor doesn't display. I restarted it, but it did the same thing, no 'shutting down windows' text (or spinning loading icon), and same for starting up. I just wanted a second display. Any ideas?
UPDATE: Control + Alt + Delete works... it shows a grey screen

Solution
Sounds like the computer (which I'm guessing is a laptop) is configured to show the main desktop on one of the other displays, not the laptop one. Plug the screens back in, configure windows to "do nothing" when the lid of the laptop is closed
