Hello,

I'm having some problems and would appreciate any help. I got an old computer for free a few days ago. Let me start by mentioning the specs:

Windows XP Home Edition SP2
AMD Duron 850Mzh
256MB RAM
ATI AWI 128 Pro

The computer has rather obviously been modified and now has XP as mentioned and 3 separate hard drives for well over 50GB.

Every time I ran the computer the message ''cpu is unworkable or has changed'' came up, but pressing F1 allowed the computer to run without any issues. I did some reading online how to remove this problem and there was a post where someone mentioned that something as simple as saving and exiting (in the startup (BIOS) setup after pressing 'del') could remove the issue. I didn't change any settings at all myself since I got the computer and then resumed to do so, save and exit. My computer made the default restart automatically after doing so but after restart nothing at all happend, no 'beep' sound, monitor: 'no signal', just the power was on. After some tweeking I found out that my keyboard with a PS/2 port is causing the problem at every startup, my mouse in it's PS/2 port works fine. If I restart without the keyboard XP runs without problems. To get a new Windows startup to work if I plug in the keyboard I need to remove my power cord (turning off isn't enough). Also if I plug in the keyboard after XP is up and running and my mouse works everything freezes and I again have to unplug my power cord after a forced shut down.

I have not yet tried with a USB keyboard, I can do so tomorrow, I would however very much prefer my old keyboard (which worked until 'save and exit') that I had on a prior Win98 computer and to also save USB ports. I'm also rather curious what caused this strange problem and what can be done to make the computer work smoothly again in all aspects.

Sorry for the lenghty problem details, I figured it's better to tell you all I know now so that you don't have to ask as many details later. I also should specify that this Computer seems to be a clone and not a particular brand, also I don't use this computer for the internet, I use it for old software.

Any help much appreciated, thanks!

Ok, I've tried out a number of things with different machines and keyboards. First of all the PS/2 keyboard works perfectly with my other computer. With the computer with the problem I can not start up with neither a wireless nor wire keyboard if I have it plugged into any USB port. However contrary to the PS/2 keyboard I can plug them in while in Windows and make them work without freezing the system, I can even get the computer to restart with my keyboard plugged in (so yes I can get into the setup using 'del'). However if I shut down the computer, however briefly, I am still faced with the same problem that the computer will not start. Unfortunately this still leaves me with a permanent problem.

Now that I am able to enter the setup what can I do to make my keyboard(s) work without problems like before saving and exiting in the setup originally?

Your help is much appreciated, thanks!
