Hello,
My external hard drive is up to no good! I've backed up most of it. Last week Windows 7 enterprise stopped reading it. Asked for format drive, of which I declined. My computer sees the drive as d:/ but I can't access files. It's NTFS. I reinstalled Windows 7 after this and still the same problem. It's recognised as d:/ but appears to have no file system. I've tried recuva and it doesn't recognize the drive has a file system.
THEN... I plug the drive into my TV, a Samsung and it reads the file structure and files perfectly. Any ideas on how to get my files off the hdd or readable again, before I lose the music I've got since my last back up? Only 3 months, but it's podcasts and apps that take ages to download.
Thanks for reading and any advice
Sincerely
Konsoul

Try giving the external hard disc a definite letter as a drive, e.g Drive "W", it may then be recognised.
I had same problem on a WD external drive, it was allocated to one computer as a "hard drive" with property for "quick removal" (I think) reset the drive letter and removed the "easy removal" , so it MUST be removed via USB removal. This solved the problem.

So, it looks like I'm an amatuer! I went through all the advice, and even got it to be named G:\, but can't access files on it. It repeatedly asks if I want to format it! It's not showing up in explorer as G, but the Computer Management centre sees it as Disk 1 954GB space. I have been asked to initialise it to 2 seperate ways, but got an error no matter what choice i make.

In Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation at Other Devices for the Mass Storage Controller. I've downloaded the software SES driver from WD, which allowed me to work on the driver letter aspect, maybe i will continue repairing the SES and see what happens.

Thanks.
