I'm a HUGE computer lover, and will be buying this for a gpu upgrade: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130836&nm_mc=OTC-Channel&cm_mmc=OTC-channel-_-Video+Card+-+Nvidia-_-EVGA-_-14130836&srccode=cii_7240466&cpncode=26-44228870&DEPA=0&refer=channel&CMP=OTC-
I notice that compared to hard-core gpus like gtx 770 throught titan z, it is not that powerful. So I want to later invest in a tesla if I can. But I want to know if it will work.
Specs are:
Intel Core I7-3770 3.4 GHz
Nvidia Geforce GT 640 1 GB GDDR5 (Will be that gtx.)
12 GB 1333 MHz RAM
2+1 TB 7200 rpm HDD.

I think youre confusing workstation cards with enthusiast class (gaming) GPUs...your choice of the GTX 660 is fine for gaming and some productivity, although I'd recommend a GTX 760 instead.

If you want a workstation card, youll want to buy a GTX Titan or Quadro. Assuming a normal budget (and usage)...I think youll be good with a GTX line consumer card (GTX 660/670/760/770...etc)
