I just moved into a new apartment a month ago, and got myself all set up with Comcast. I bought a modem myself (ARRIS / Motorola SB6121 SURFboard) and everything seemed fine for two weeks. Last week however, I had a random disconnect one day. And another two the next... and now I have gotten to the point where I am disconnecting almost 10 times per day. The disconnects can be anywhere from 1 minute to a half hour.
At first, I thought it was Comcast, but I think I have narrowed the problem down to my modem. During one of my incidents, I decided to ping (Linux) my modem (192.168.100.1). It replied once after 30 seconds, then again after two minutes, then a couple more times within a 10 minute period (Overall, 95% ping packets lost). The router I have is fine; it has always responded.
What steps should I take to try and resolve this? What more information is needed?
It seems like a bad modem to me, but are there any correctable measures I can take? Is this just one of those 1/1000 manufacturing failure things?
