Internet goes down several times a day

I just moved into a new apartment a month ago, and got myself all set up with Comcast. I bought a modem myself (ARRIS / Motorola SB6121 SURFboard) and everything seemed fine for two weeks. Last week however, I had a random disconnect one day. And another two the next... and now I have gotten to the point where I am disconnecting almost 10 times per day. The disconnects can be anywhere from 1 minute to a half hour.

At first, I thought it was Comcast, but I think I have narrowed the problem down to my modem. During one of my incidents, I decided to ping (Linux) my modem (192.168.100.1). It replied once after 30 seconds, then again after two minutes, then a couple more times within a 10 minute period (Overall, 95% ping packets lost). The router I have is fine; it has always responded.

What steps should I take to try and resolve this? What more information is needed?

It seems like a bad modem to me, but are there any correctable measures I can take? Is this just one of those 1/1000 manufacturing failure things?

It's a router I bought myself, as I mentioned. I haven't talked to Comcast, because I'd rather not use one of their modems.

Well...it very well may be an issue outside your house.

So your router is fine
Your modem may not be fine
The incoming signal from COmcast may not be fine.

Correct. Well, haven't touched the router. But I did both of those with the modem.
