Hello, I am moving from my apartment where I get this: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3588308260 to a very well developed area (Huntersville, NC) that apparently has almost no ISP's. My options are just Windstream and a local business (Mi-Connection) where they are charging $100/month for 60Mbps down/10Mbps up. There's no way I can pay this coming from Charter which gave me the above speeds for $30. I've read reviews on Windstream and it's just bad review after bad review, I don't know what I'm going to do!

Should I try a wireless provider? Verizon has their 4G LTE service but wont that give me horrible ping for online games? I just bought a new rig to play BF4/other shooters and I really don't want to be crippled by low ping due to having a wireless internet provider, I just don't see a good solution. What's the best thing for me? What are good speeds for gaming? Some say that 5Mbps is all you need, others say you should never go below 20Mbps. Please help :/

I feel the pain. We have a similar situation where I live. Not quite as drastic but another monopoly on isp here. They charge what they want, period. They have absolute power. This is something that really grieves me these days. There is so much price fixing going on. Gone are the days of the government bringing lawsuits against price fixing. Companies are just finding ways around it. What I do is this: Call your isp provider and ask for retention. Dont bother talking to a normal rep on the phone, go directly to retention. They have the power to give you a better deal. I lived in 3 different cities where I did the same thing. Just tell retention "hey, I simply cannot afford your going rate, please give me your best deal." They always do. It is usually an extension of the "bait" deal that goes something like "first year is blah blah, then it goes up. I get the first year deal for ever by just calling every year and talking to them. Currently I am paying $42 per month, which is more than I want to pay but my isp's lowest deal is 30 down and 4 up. I don't need that much bandwith because I don't play games but they no longer offer a slower service. Good luck.
