is there anything else i need to know about downloading the iso or am i doing something wrong? i know i can buy the recovery disk for toshiba but they want 40 bucks for it and i can't afford that right now

Solution

That will likely be very difficult to replicate, OEM copies are often branded, and I'm going to assume that would be part of the match. And anything you download from Microsoft will be the "latest and greatest" lol, further reducing the likelihood of a match. Unfortunately you are likely stuck with talking to Toshiba. It's not just Toshiba you would have these problems with though, this would be the process with basically any preinstalled manufacturer OS, unless they provide install media. Next time you should follow USAF's advice, make a recovery disk of your own when you get a new PC like this. Might reduce future headaches.

Well if you don't have a key and you don't have access to the recovery, your only other option is to call Microsoft. When you install Windows, when it asks you for your activation key, there should be an option for phone activation. Call that number and it will talk you through the process. It may work it may not :-/ If that doesn't work you should call your laptop manufacturer and discuss it with them.

Another question real quick though, is your desktop copy OEM or full retail?

IF it was retail you'd have some leeway on how many machines you can use the key for :-/ OEM copies are strictly limited. Yeah I'd try phone activation first, then call your manufacturer if that doesn't work. As far as the ISO goes though, the USB drive you have should work fine for installing the OS.

i don't think you understand all i need is a download for windows 8, you don't need to type in the key as it's in the bios

Thanks for the correction USAFRet, thought the retail copies let you install on more than one machine, was misinformed :)

Windows Download for OP:

Windows 8 Installation Media
OEM/Retail
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?linkid=271128
Note-you'll need to download from a PC with the same Architecture (64/32bit) as the Target Machine. No known legal d'loads for OEM installs...

Problem with this is to read the Key from your motherboard, the OS has to be EXACTLY matched to what your mobo says it should be. Otherwise it won't activate. So I go back to my original answer :-/ Call Microsoft for activation, or call your manufacturer. If those don't work, you might have to buy a new key.

There are methods to extract your key from your mobo, but again, if the EXACT version of Windows isn't matched, it won't activate.

What I was trying to tell you is it won't work lol. Your machine was installed with an OEM copy, this link will not match your motherboard. You might get lucky with a phone call to Microsoft but I doubt it :-/ You are likely just going to have to get the recovery disk from Toshiba. Anyway, good luck.

The BIOS does store the OEM key. If you make a clean install on an unpartitioned HDD with an MSDN installer, it can detect the key. However, the windows edition of the key must match the edition of the installer (Pro, with or without Media Center Pack, Enterprise, OEM, etc.). If the two don't match, the installer will prompt to enter the key and activate Windows.

Every now and then you can get lucky :p ;-) sometimes worth a try. I agree though, that is the most likely result.
