I had my old 460 gtx die on me. I contacted Gigabyte about the warranty. I purchased the card new in 2011. Gigabyte's claim is that the warranty is from the date of manufacture not purchase. They claim the card was manufactured in 2010. That means when I received the card it was already one year into the warranty. Effectively I one get a 2 year warranty instead of 3. This is the first product I have tried to RMA and never run into this before. Is this normal?

No, that's not normal.

But the only thing that really matters is what is in writing. What specifically does the warranty paperwork say?

Gigabyte uses the date of manufacture to determine when the warranty starts and when eligibility ends. The upside of using this method is unlike many other manufacturers they do not require a proof of purchase when submitting a warranty request. If you submit the proof of purchase they may extend it for you.

I don't have the original paperwork The only thing I can find is on Gigabyte's Site. I cannot find anything about date of manufacture, only warranty is 3 years. I am not to upset about the card, it is old. I was looking to buy a new card anyway. My concern is, if this the case, I will not buy another gigabyte product. There is no way to tell when the product was manufactured before buying it.

You can check the warranty status online at rma.gigabyte.us. You can also send them an email at services@gigabyteusa.com to see if they'll honour the warranty even though it was manufactured more than 3 years ago.

Hey thanks for the help. The site tells me the warranty is effective until 15 days after date I purchased the product.

you're most welcome.

Even if they refuse to honour the warranty they may still be willing to repair the product at your expense, or strike a deal in which they pay for the parts and you pay for the labour. I've done this with a Samsung TV that was out of warranty, a $150 repair is nothing compared to buying a new Plasma TV.
