Do I need a new router and modem?

My ISP is SuddenLink and I have a router/modem combo from SMC. I believe my wife bought it from SuddenLink about 3-5 years ago. I believe it is time to buy a new router and modem. The we have about 2-3 bars across the hallway of the router and the Roku streaming is becoming more and more sketchy, especially with HBOGO. Netflix used to work amazingly well, but has started giving us issues. The price isn't a huge deal. I just don't need overkill such as the new Netgear Nighthawk, but if I need it so be it!

Or do I need to upgrade my internet speed? My internet speed is 15Mbps with a 250GB montly cap. We have surpassed the montly cap twice since August 2013

I do not have cable television so we stream everything onto a Roku2. So at any time I would need to be able to keep up with:

2 Roku2(might replace with Roku3 soon)
2 Smartphones (iphone4 and htc one)
1 Laptop (Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro)

Every now and then I'll add Xbox360 Live and a tablet into the mix

Any suggestions?

And future thanks!

If you get disconnected or buffer a lot try changing the wireless channel mode to a different one if you can. And make sure the modem is not broadcasting in a corner of a wall or it will reduce the signal.

But if that doesn't work guess buy a stronger newer router and modem. My setup is the SB6121 connected to my WNDR3400 V1 Dual Band router 2.4-5ghz channels. But if you don't care about control or all that bell and whistles guess you can get a combo router.

Those modems listed on the site some are outdated but its just a guide which modem works. Mines is not listed but works great to give you an idea...

Ive had NPG in AZ since 2009 before it was bought by suddenlink. I replaced my router it was a motorola surfboard sb520 something like that i can't remember but my modem kept disconnecting all the time when i was loading up a website or youtube video anything with bandwidth.

So i bought a modem from walmart for 80$ Docsis 3.0 Motorola SB6121 and had to call suddenlink to activated and make sure you remind them that its a docsis 3.0 or the servers are not going to accept it.

Soon as it was activated i never got a disconnect ever since i replaced it last year. My speeds im paying for is 15mb 48$ a month 5 dollars off the rental fee something like that since i bought my own. Netflix streams fine it only needs 2Mbps or less unless you watch ultra HD that requires at least 10mbps.

I have seen good reviews for the new Motorola SBs. I would need a new router as well since it was an all-in-one router and modem, any suggestions?

We sometimes get disconnected but that could be because the roku is getting old and has to restart. Other times it just wants to buffer for a long time, starts, buffers more, and then sometimes buffer in the middle of an episode.

Thanks for replying!
