I currently bought an AsRock Fatality Z87 Killer motherboard and a i7 4790K processor to go with it. The website says I should update my BIOS to 1.40 for it to work but I do not have any other CPU. Is it possible to update it via Instant Flash without any CPU, and if so how (which hardware parts need to be present and what connections should be made)?

The MB will likely boot with your CPU, just may not properly recognize it as a 4790K.(you should be able to flash to the newest bios) Other than that, take it into your local independent repair shop and they will likely flash it for you.(i'm sure a small fee will be required)

Should I at least give it a go with my current CPU then? Can I accidentally harm CPU or motherboard doing so?

Seriously, acilikola? The motherboard will work fine with that CPU even without flashing the BIOS. The newer 4790K CPU just has a few enhancements in its instruction set which you may or may not actually even use. If the motherboard was gonna BLOW UP your chip, Asrock would have a giant red sticker on the box saying do!

I can remember one of my first builds with an Athlon XP1800 and paying an insane amount for that chip. I was nervous too as acilikola when handling the CPU.

I appreciate the concern, but that was then, this is now. He can install his 4790K in that mb and it will work just fine but he may be missing a few enhancements and it may not even report that it's a 4790K chip but maybe a 4770K chip. The Instant Flash on the current mb will handle the pesky details.
