Linux is a very lightweight kernel. Which linux OS is best just depends on which one you like the best really..I personally prefer Ubuntu and Mint, but thats just me

There certainly isn't a best distribution based on hardware. As previous poster said, a lot of it is preference.

You can adapt just about any Linux distribution to match your needs and preferences.

One important feature in making a choice could be the default desktop environment (i.e. Gnome, KDE), though this is also something that can be changed to suit your needs.

Might be redundant info but all of the Linux distros are designed with specific purposes and so it all depends on what you need/want.

I am personally using Ubuntu but that is because I'm new to Linux and so I wanted one of the more maintstream distros, so that I knew it had lots of support and that I could find help when I need it.

Maybe this list can help you http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/best-linux-distro-five-we-recommend-1090058/3
That is if your willing to read it all
