I have been gpu searching for a while now but have finally landed on the r9 290. However, the question now becomes: Exactly which r9 290?

I have narrowed the list down to a few. Any help would be appreciated.

Sapphire tri-x
Sapphire Vapor-x
Asus Direct Cu II
MSI Twin Frozr

If I am missing an even better one that fits into the budget of around $450-$460 maximum please feel free to let me know. Thank you!

They're all great, with the tri-x as the best. If you want to overclock, the tri-x is the way to go!

What is the exact difference between the vapor x and the tri x?

Vapor-X has slightly better cooling. Slightly better the the good cooling already provided by the Tri-X.
I have the Tri-X and it performs wonderfully.
The Vapor-X is not relly woth the extra $$. If you can get it for $10-20 more, perhaps.

Vapor-X is the "high" end model by Sapphire, but the trade-offs aren't worth it in my opinion. That's why I went Dual-X (280x) and I'd also recommend the Tri-X instead. Vapor is fast but loud.
