I am planning on upgrading from a i7 4770k to a i7 4790k because I am a computer enthusiast . my current motherboard is a asus z87 rog maximus vi hero . on newegg.com I an get a i7 4790k and msi z97 gaming 7 in a combo deal for $ 482 . so it will be like I am paying $142 for the msi z97 gaming 7 which is a good deal . do you think it would be a downgrade if I was to go from a asus z87 rog maximus vi hero to a msi z97 gaming 7 ? and do you think I should use my asus z87 rog maximus vi hero for my new i7 4790k ?

More about : asus z87 rog maximus hero msi z97 gaming downgrade

From what I read, if you are going to change from 4770K+ VI hero to 4790k + z97 gaming 7, I think you may get a little bit better performances, I think that is waste your $$$, but that is your money and you can do whatever you want.

I currently have my i7 4770k stable @ 4.3ghz and my un-core @ 3.7ghz using 1.254v v-core and 1.200v un-core voltage
in my bios . I am having a real hard time getting my cpu stable @ 4.4ghz . if I were able to get my i7 4770k stable @ 4.5ghz I would keep it

Every single chip, even they have the same lot number, they are different, some can oc high, like my i5 2500k, I can't go over 4.3/4.4ghz ( I don't remember) with 212 plus. I think it call that is ceiling. Now I use it at 3.9ghz.

And what are you doing for ocing over 4.3/4.4 ghz, for benchmark like that? Or do you use the H2O or air cooler?

I have a corsair h100i . my max temperature when running aida64 is 77c I only got my i7 4770k stable @ 4.3ghz I gave up on trying to get stable @ 4.4ghz . I would need over 1.300v and my temperatures would be to high

Think you may have missed on the silicon lottery with your CPU, a different mobo may help but the Hero is one of the better OCing mobos I've had, any chance of trying your CPU on another mobo? rather than simply buying a new one? I like to try CPUs on a couple mobos, but then too since I build, I have a couple or more available to me

I know I lost the silicon lottery with my i7 4770k . I just ordered the i7 4790k and msi z97 gaming 7 in a bundle deal for $487 from newegg.com . do you think the msi z97 gaming 7 is a better motherboard then the asus z87 rog maximus vi hero ? if you were getting a i7 4790k and had to choose between a msi z97 gaming 7 and a asus z87 rog hero what motherboard would you get ?

Already been there, done that, picked up the Z97 Hero when they were released, love my Z87 Hero (in sig), but have to say, the Z97 is even better, pulled the guts from my Z87 just to see and same CPU I had in the Z87 (4.6) runs 4.8 at same voltage I had on the Z87, DRAM OCs to 2800 with less voltage than the Z87 needed, the mobo itself run cooler, the 780s are pretty much the same (haven't pushed them any more than the 25% OC I had in the Z87), the BIOS can be tuned a little finer....At present I have things sort of split between the two, replaced the 4770K back to the Z87 and put a spare in the Z97 (it's running 4.7 at less than the Z87 runs 4.6, split the 780s, and have 16GB in each of 2666, the Z97 is running it at 2800. Once things calm down will decide on either the 4690K or 4790K and what GPU or GPUs for the Z97, would like to try the new Asus 780 Strix(s) with improvered performance and quiter fan system, but haven't been able to find a release date, might go 780TI or give AMD anotther shot w/ 290X

I was thinking about getting the asus z97 rog hero but I wanted to try the other brands . do you think the Kaspersky anti virus software that came with my z87 rog driver cd will work on my new msi z97 gaming 7 ?

will I be able to use the same windows 7 oem product key that I am currently using on my asus z87 rog hero on my msi z97 gaming 7 or will I have to buy another activation key ? I am going to try to activate my current windows 7 oem product key using the phone . if they don't want to reactivate my windows product key will I have a option to buy a product key over the phone ? or will I have to go buy the dvd and product key and reinstall windows again ?

The license is only good on a single computer, so if dumping the previous, then it's perfectly legal to use it on the new rig, will probably have to reactivate it

If you need to, it's up to you, 8 is newer and can be set up to run just like 7

I'm still running Win 7 on my rigs, I worked the Beta for MicroSoft on Win8, and just not overly enthused, have it on a couple rigs still to run in a VM for support purposes
