So I built my own computer around last December of 2013 and have been using it frequently since then. It's pretty good and fast and I've been enjoying it but I have been having some problems with many different games. In a wide variety of games I've had frequent issues where the game will freeze for a moment then crash. I get the error message "AMD drivers have stopped responding and recovered succesfully". , and I then I need to restart the game. I looked up the issue and I found this thread that described it as a TDR issue:

http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/737-27116RadeonSeries-ATIKMDAGhasstoppedrespondingerrormessages.aspx

So I looked through all of the possible causes and tried them all. (updating graphics and motherboard drivers, redownloading microsoft direct x, etc etc) but none of these fixed my issues and I still got constant crashes with the same message.

However one of the possible causes was overheated cpu and I have noticed when I open the BIOS that my cpu is around 50 C when idle and I don't really know what it is under full load but I assume its higher. I'm pretty sure that this may be the reason for the crashes and I wanted to ask for help on what I can do to fix this.

So anyway I geuss I should give you some description on what I have:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K GPU: Radeon R9 280x
And I am using the stock heatsink that came with my cpu. I dont know if you need to know anything else. Anyway I'm not sure if what I should do is try to apply thermal paste to the heatsink or if I should buy a liquid cpu cooler or what and I need some advice. And by the way my computer is not currently overclocked.
Thanks for any advice

50 C when idle is very high. I suspect you installed the stock cooler wrong, or applied too much thermal paste or something like that. One thing, DO NOT game on that machine anymore. I don't know how hot it can get but it might damage your CPU.
So you should check your thermal paste and cooler. If that doesn't do the job you can buy an aftermarket cooler.

WAIT
Anyway I'm not sure if what I should do is try to apply thermal paste to the heatsink
Are you saying you did not use thermal paste?? Because if you didn't, do it and things should be much better.

Okay so I went to the store and bought some basic thermal paste/compound. I took my heatsink off of the cpu, cleaned both with isopropyl alcohol, and then applied the thermal paste. I ran my computer and the temperature was still hot. In fact it was even hotter than before it was 55C and even up to 60C on bootup. I re-applied the termal paste again and again trying to not use to much but I still got the same results. I don't know what to do now.

Well, that is pretty weird. I guess your cooler doesn't work right or the general airflow in your case is not right. How many fans do you have in your case?
