Re-applied thermal paste the other day to the GPU's and CPU after blowing air through the case. Now it wont start. No fans. Just a flickering LED on the MoBo. Already went through the sticky steps. Disconnected everything from mobo. Same result. Tried differen't mobo, same result. Tried known working psu, same result. Tried shorting the psu, fan kicks on, connect to mobo, solid light, still no fans kicking on or any other signs of life other than the LED.

I know I bent some pins on both mobos, but understand that it shouldn't effect the fans from at least turning on. I'm completely lost now in my attempts to troubleshoot this system.

Curious if the PSU fried both MoBo's? Have another comp setup but am afraid to try the psu in it in case it damages that pc as well. Any help would be most appreciated.

""I know I bent some pins on both mobos"" . cpu socket bent pins is a proplem. if you have gone through the sticky steps you would have known that. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/311864-30-bent-socket-pins

Yea I saw that part and of course I bent the pins back. From what I understand the system fans should at least still boot up even without solid connections on the pins, right? Is there a way to determine if the psu is safe to test on another known working system. I'm close to just upgrading the mobo and chipset at this point (have old i7920) but don't want to risk frying another mobo, if that was the case. thanks.

what is your psu?also you may have bent back the pins but how many did you actualy bent? also If some of those pins were shorted to any other pins or have shorted to other CPU pads, it could be bad!

Thermaltake Toughpower Cable Management 750W that is an old but an ok unit though further testing must be done to clear things out.since you have already tested another psu with the mobos last thing lesft is to try another mobo.x58 are kind of rare to find though! you stated that reapplied thermal paste to the gpus. have you done it right?try posting again with no gpus to see if cpu fan kicks in.at that point i would test each one of the parts!(also try clearing the cmos on mobos)

Yea, i tried booting comp w.o gpu's installed. No fan's kick on or anything. I tested on another x58 mobo i had a cmos error on *but would at least attempt to boot* and didn't do anything but the led light on the mobo. which pulsed seemingly showing a fluctuation of current to the mobo (both mobo's did this). if i short the green and blk wire on the psu then connect to mobo, the light would stay constant, but no fans or any other signs of life.even tried a diff cpu fan. no luck. GRRrr :(.
