Im building budget(ish) pc, and I want to get the new Pentium g3258, and I have a few questions, When I saw the specs, it states that on 'memory support', it says that its only '1333mhz'. Does this mean that I can only get 1333mhz memory? And another, should I get this CPU?

Thanks In Advance :D

That is a little bit of an exaggeration, but getting 1333 MHz memory with a low latency (CL6 or CL7) should be perfect.

umm, so if I get like a 1600mhz memory, there will be no changes/advantages?

Not sure that CPU supports it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231402&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

So should I get the Pentium, or spend more on the i5 4690k?

It depends on what GPU you are getting. It isn't all that Budget-oriented, but would be great for gaming.

Hey,

1) The G3258 is a great value CPU that can give most of the performance of a similar Haswell with four cores for most games. It will fall behind in a few games, but if you're on a budget the money is best put towards a better graphics card, for example the G3258 + Asus GTX750Ti.

2) The G3258 can be overclocked, however spending more on a motherboard capable of doing this starts to defeat the budget point as it may start to make more sense to get a different CPU.

3) You are NOT limited to 1333MHz memory. Just look at what the motherboard supports. In general, just get the best value 1600MHz CAS9 (two sticks) such as 2x4GB 1600MHz C9 (8GB total). You can get away with 4GB if really stretched budget-wise.

I have an i7-3770K and the Intel site says it supports 1333/1600 but I'm using 2133MHz memory right now which I'm guessing means the motherboard has its own memory controller that it uses instead but I'm not certain.

so, I can get more than 1333mhz? and will it bottleneck the Asus GTX760 Striker?

Yes, you can get more than 1333MHz though for games it won't make much difference. There are times it makes a small difference so might as well get 1600MHz CAS9 since the price is about the same.

No, you won't bottleneck the GTX760.

Technically if you had really slow memory you would bottleneck the CPU which MAY in turn bottleneck the graphics card but no, you won't have any bottleneck issues with TWO STICKS of 1600MHz.

TWO STICKS? if less? If more?

You need 2 sticks of RAM for dual channel, for example, if you wanted 8 GB of RAM, then you get 2 4 GB sticks. 10-15% more performance,

haha, hope that the chip I get does not suck and can OC

Oh yeah. You will be happy with it. Make sure you have a good cooler, though.

The STOCK cooler would be good enough, though I'm not sure how noisy it would be. Make sure it's properly connected to the CPU_FAN on the motherboard AND your fan control software is setup (may need to download software from the motherboard site).

The CPU has only two cores and generates a lot less heat than one with four cores such as the i5-4670K so it won't need as much cooling.

Also, there is still an overall BUDGET to consider. That's the entire point of getting the G3258 in the first place so some tough decisions have to be made.

*Here's a BUILD recommendation (USA?): http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wYbJmG

You may not like the case. I didn't do much research. Get one that has:
a) front USB3, and
b) at least one fan

Windows 8.1 is a definite yes, but I also recommend Start8 and tweak to avoid the Charms Bar in the desktop and boot direct to the traditional desktop.

*The total price is about $767. If you used the i5-4690K instead which is $240 (versus $75) it would be about $932 which is a lot more.

MOST games would not benefit too much from the better CPU, but some would and that will only continue into the future; Battlefield 4 for example can use use almost 100% of the i5-4670K's processing power at times. However considering the G3258 is only $75 you could always REPLACE it later if money is tight now.

It's going to depend a lot on the games you plan to play as well. If mostly older games which is fine because they're often cheap on STEAM (Skyrim etc) they'll generally run great on the G3258. There are again some exceptions. Metro 2033/LL is very demanding on both the CPU and the Graphics.

I thought the Pentium requires a Z97 board? Your build was similar to what I had in mind. Can the 212 EVO cool the proc. OCed? Instead of a regular 760, I wanted the Asus 760 Striker. Still not sure what case to get but I'll give the Source a thought. I was also planning to get a ssd

Get a Z97 board in general, it doesn't matter if Z87 boards support it. It is the same price, and it has much newer and better features. For your GPU, going Pentium-760 isn't going to yield the best performance. I am thinking more along the lines of a Core i3 or an AMD Athlon X4 750K and a GTX 750 Ti. That will give MUCH better performance. I am talking 30 fps vs 60 fps.

Pentium 760? and isnt the gtx760 better than the 750ti?

I am talking about Pentium and GTX 760. You want a better CPU and a little bit of a lower end card. That Pentium will probably bottleneck that GPU in most cases. Balance the system more, and you will not have such of a bad bottleneck.

So, which CPU should I get?
