So this summer, my school friends and I decided to take our PC gaming a step further and build our own PCs. I have all of the components needed for my PC assembled in the tower except for a wireless adapter (how ironic that I forget the one component absolutely necessary to download games). Ethernet connection is already not an option, as the router and modem are located in my living room, and I have no way to relocate it to my bedroom (In which my PC will be kept). This is my first build, so I'm unfamiliar with most hardware. However, I know that I need a PCI wireless adapter for my motherboard. After searching online, I am having trouble finding a PCI wireless adapter without one-star reviews claiming that there is a plethora of driver installation issues. If someone has any idea of wireless adapters that are compatible with windows 8.1 straight out of the box (I don't mind using a DVD to install drivers), please link them here and give me a little insight as to how I install the drivers. Thanks for helping a newbie with his first build!

For a single band router, get an Asus N15 ($30). For a dual band router, get an Asus N53 ($50)

You don't have to get a PCI wireless adapter. Just get a usb wireless adapter. Pretty much most of them should work with your computer, as long as it doesn't specifically say otherwise.

How exactly would I be able to determine whether my router is single band or dual band?

Awesome! Thank you! And as for what this other poster is talking about concerning my router being single band or dual band, is that something to consider when buying an adapter?

It sounds like it probably wouldn't make a difference to you whether your router is single or dual band. Don't take this wrong, but if you are not sure of the difference, not knowing will not affect you. Just get a wireless usb adapter that has a 300mbps data transfer rate (minimum), and is "Wireless-N". It will be backwards compatible with anything before wireless-n as well. This is an absolute PERFECT and easy answer for you, as well as an outstanding deal financially. (notice it even states in the title that it supports Windows 8.1)
