Normally one would just look at the capacity of a hard drive in order to decide which one to buy. But what else should I look in a hard drive to tell how good it is, aside from its capacity?

And I am talking about "regular" hard drives, not SSD drives.

Solution
I first decide which speed drive to get. 7200 for boot or gaming drives.
5400 or 5900 is fine IMO for drives being accessed over the network.

Next I try to find the retail (boxed) drive. I tend not to by oem or bare drives because of typically poor packaging for shipping.

Finally IO read reviews of the drives to see if they seem to have early failure issues. This is the hard part since some bad reviews are really due to an inexperienced user.

To illustrate heres two of the exact same drive with reviews all over the place, is the real difference in quality the retail box? :

Most people look for a cheap hard disk.

Some look for seek times, others look for transfer rates.

Some people look for energy use and heat generated.

I look for MTBF (mean time between failures.)

It all depends on what You mean by "good."
