Strange problem - dying SSD?

Hi, I had a rather strange problem and I'm afraid it's a sign my SSD is dying...

It started about two weeks ago, shortly after I updated to the 14.6 beta drivers for AMD. I crashed to a bsod while playing Watchdogs (installed on my HDD) and when it restarted I got the dreaded black screen with the "disc read error" message.

Which of course made me think my SSD had died since it's the drive my OS is on, but after turning the system off and back on, Windows booted up normally and everything seemed to be running just fine. (and as quick as ever)

Since then I started to have occasional crashes while playing Natural Selection 2 (installed to my SSD) but I figured they were due to the beta drivers because everything else was still running just fine... Until yesterday when NS2 crashed, then windows explorer locked up, and when it tried to restart, I got another bsod...

When I restarted the system it froze on the screen with the Windows icon.. Restarting it again prompted me to do a system repair, which gave the error code 0x490. (which is what made me think it was a problem with Win7) - Then when it restarted I got the black "disc read error" screen again... (which makes me afraid it is the SSD)

Powered it down, waited a few seconds and fired it back up... Everything was working again as fast as ever... I moved NS2 from my SSD to my HDD and rolled the drivers back to 14.4 just as a precaution, but when I restarted after finishing the driver install, Windows froze again, which prompted a repair on the next attempt (error code 0x490 again) then on the third reboot it started up just fine again...

I talked to a friend who knows more than I do, and he said it could either be my SSD dying, (most likely) a virus, or a problem with a Win7 update. (least likely) I ran Norton and it showed nothing, but Malwarebytes removed like 8 pup's.. Since then I've been testing it with various games and programs, and everything seems to be running just fine again and quick as ever... (which makes me wonder if it could have been virus/malware)

So I'm stumped... .The black "disc read error" screen makes me afraid that it is the SSD, but if that were the case wouldn't I be having more problems? Like slow loading times, or more consistent crashes.. Been googling "signs of a dying SSD" and seeing that the typical sign seems to be slow loading... yet mine is still loading as fast as it ever did...

Sorry for the lengthy explanation, wanted to include as much info as possible...

System specs
OS: Win 7 x64 bit
CPU: Intel I7 3820 @ 3.6GHz
MOBO: ASUS P9X79
RAM: 16 GB Corsair Vengeance
GPU: MSI Lightning R9 290x
SSD: Kingston 180GB
HDD: WD Black 4TB

Thank you in advance for any help. My knowledge of PC's is still somewhat lacking (especially concerning software) but I'm learning. :)

It's not a bad SSD. Bad drives (SSD or HDD) will tend to show consistent gradual errors that build up over time until the system is unusable or it just craps out all at once. It sounds more like something got corrupted, I would suspect bad drivers that caused Windows system files to become damaged. I had the same problem since running the 14.6 beta drivers. It sounds like you keep your system well maintained, so I would suggest reinstalling Windows and all of the drivers first. Your friend has the right idea, he just has the order reversed.

You are awesome kind sir. So relieved to know that it's not my SSD.

Now I just have to reinstall Windows and all the drivers. Not exactly how I wanted to spend my afternoon, but hey it's a million times better than a bad SSD. lol

Thanks for the help. :)
