i have a Toshiba satellite and recently the kernel data ruined my hard drive. im looking for a replacement but cant afford to buy another 500gb one ... can I use any other 2.5 sata to replace it or do I have to get another one with with the same model number ?

Solution
Definitely doesn't have to be the same model number or brand, which is just as well because that HDD model is most likely discontinued anyway by now. Nor does it have to be the same capacity, but as near to 500 GB as you can afford (ie 320 GB would be okay, it just means you'll have less free space for storage and apps after Windows has been installed).

thanks man ... I had no idea how another model would affect the laptop

Hi

I would like to know how 'kernel data ruined your hard drive'
or who told you that rubbish

Laptop hard drives are usually damaged by vibration or impact while in use
Occasionally by long term overheating or old age

While corruption occurs if PC is turned off while still writing data

Modern drives are likely to be advanced format which can cause problems when re installing XP (latter windows should be able to handle this )
( change from 512 to 4096 b sectors & need to start partition on multiple of 4096 b Not 512 b )

I was using it one day when It crashed, then a pop up about kernel data not working, then a black screen and shut down. when I tried to restart it said no bootable device and the hard drive was making clicking sounds. So I got told my hard drive was broke and I would have to replace it. Only problem now is i've bought another Toshiba hard drive and it fits but its only 320gb instead of the original 500gb but its still telling me no bootable device .... I don't know what to do

Hi

I presume you have a windows cd or DVD or a Toshiba recovery DVD set

If not cheapest is a Toshiba recovery DVD set from Toshiba or free someone with an identicle model Toshiba laptop

Then boot from no 1 disk in set of 2 or 3
It will partition new drive into 3 partitions hidden recovery then c: & d: install windows on c: and put files on DVD set on d: (assuming win 7)

After a series of reboots disk will be back to condition when laptop was new

Then a day or so of windows updates and reboots before you are back up to date
