Reinstalling windows 7 ultimate

Ok, I'm pretty sure I will have to do a clean install of windows on my hdd because I'm replacing my mobo and CPU. But, I have an external hard drive with a shadow copy and system image on it from a recent windows backup. Can I get into the backup and restore program files and/ or files manually from the backup. My only problem is the backup folders don't have names, they are just numbered. I have to open each one to see what files are in them. Or can I do a file restoration from the backup, not a system restore, or the OS, just restoration of my files from the backup. I know it sounds confusing but windows itself can be confusing.

You will not have to do a clean install if you install the drivers for the new motherboard into Windows before you upgrade. Also make sure to match the BIOS settings to the old ones for the first boot.

When you say the bios settings, you mean to set to read the DVD drive first to boot up the installation of the OS.
