can vsync being off destroy your monitor?

Solution
On or off has no effect on the health of your monitor. On and your frame rate is linked to the refresh rate of the monitor (usually 60Hz which would mean 60FPS as a max); off and your frame rate is whatever your system and connection to the game servers (if it is not a stand alone game) will permit. I never use it. It is useful if you experience "tearing" of the image when playing. If that occurs turning on vsync will cure it.
