Do I need a wireless router to stay connected to the internet when unplugging my laptop from the cable modem?

I have Comcast cable with internet. I own only one laptop computer. I have it connected as if it were a desk top computer. I want to take it to the living room so I can sit on the couch and browse the internet, but I don't know how. Someone told me to get a router. How much should I expect to pay

You would be better off getting a router (you can get a decent one for a home network for around 30 to 60 bucks) because Comcast may install one for you but, they may charge you $5 a month for the wireless service. Check with them and if they will in fact charge you, you would be better off getting your own wireless device.
What is the model of your Comcast modem? Are you sure it does not have built in wireless? Some do and some do not. If yours does not then you just need to purchase a wireless router. For just a couple of devices surfing the internet I would not pay for a real expensive one. I would pay somewhere between $20 and $55 dollars for what you need.
