This has got me completely stumped, and I am a very good at trouble-shooting computers, specifically hardware (I do it as my job).

Specs:
MSI P67A-G43 Motherboard
i7-2600k
EVGA 1000W Gold Rated PSU

So I got a really good deal on 2 used R9 280x's on craigslist, my 560ti is starting to get tired and I always wanted a crossfire setup. So I uninstall my nvidia drivers, shut down and all that jazz. I plug just 1 of the R9 280x's in and fire it up and it won't post. First thing I am thinking is the guy ripped me off and sold me a dead card, so I plug in the other 1 and still no cigar. So I am super pissed, call the guy up and he tells me he literally pulled them out of a working computer yesterday.

So I break out my old, old gaming rig. Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, PCI Express 2.0 I think. I plug the cards in, don't even bother uninstalling drivers or none of that stuff because I am just fuming mad and not thinking. Boom, goes right to windows. Tried the other card, and windows still loads up. Tried them both in at the same time, and yep they are definitely working on this old gaming rig. Cards are fine.

Look over my motherboard, no visible issues. I plugged in my old 560ti and it would boot up and go to windows, like nothing was wrong. So I went ahead and flashed the bios, still no cigar with the 280x. This is only trying 1 at a time, no both plugged in.

So, I go full elementary style and pull ram sticks out except 1 and tried 1 slot at a time, pull out any un-needed accessories. Check connections, double check connections, triple check connections. The 8 pin CPU connection is in there, I read through every thread I could find on the internet and tried all their methods. My BIOS does not have the UEFI to Legacy option in it, so can't do that. Hell, I even drove to my workplace and tried it in a work computer and the R9 280x worked fine.

So, it's not card related. The R9 280x's will not work with my system, and there is no obvious reason why. It must be motherboard related, but the motherboard is working fine with the 560ti and this 9800 GT I have laying around from that old gaming rig. So there's some sort of compatibility issue, and getting a different motherboard would be the quick solution however I don't feel like spending the money on a motherboard if I can fix this one.

Any suggestions? Options? Help please!

I hate when people don't post a solution, so I am posting this for the next guy that needs the help and is on a frantic search in google.

Register an account on MSI HQ, activate it and login:

Go to this thread:

http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=163916.0

Download the bios from the second post (E7673IMSv542.rar)

For whatever reason this was the only bios flash that worked and recognized the cards, the newest bios flash does not work.

If your going to flash using this beta software, you must do it THEIR way. Get a USB Stick handy. Follow this guide:

For other users that have a different MSI Board, this seems to be a problem with a lot of boards that are 3 or 4 years old and your trying to use a new GPU in them.

To get new beta/modded bios for your mobo refer to this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=163900.0
