Hi

I want to build a 4k surround system. It will need three display ports to run the screens at 60hz, so I will need three graphics cards (right?).

So currently looking for 3 or 4 way SLI motherboards which can run PCI express lanes fast. Most I've found run two PCI 3.0 8x8, and one PCI 2

Any suggestions on motherboard?

Nope.
You need three Displayport's (or Dual Link DVI's I guess), that doesnt necessarily mean you need three cards. Some Eyefinity specialty cards come with five mini-DP's. You might need three cards to get anything resembling a decent performance, but you dont need three.

If your looking for triple SLI/Crossfire you need to get an X79 platform system. Mainstream Intel platforms dont support more than dual. AMD does, but I feel with this kind of rig your not looking to get an FX chip.

I can't speak for AMD, I'm largely Intel.

Motherboard - The lga2011 platform is a good starting point for tri-SLi systems. I have the ASUS P9X79 PRO, this will support triple graphics cards at x16 on PCIe 2.0 speeds. There are boards which will take 4 cards like the ASUS P9X79 WS.

Monitors - TBH I haven't heard of a 4k screen which supports dual-link DVI. My own ASUS (yes, I'm starting to sound like an Intel/ASUS fanboi) PB287Q has a displayport and 2 hdmi connections, nothing else. It's also worth noting that only the displayport runs at 60Hz on this screen, the hdmi ports run at 30Hz.

Graphics cards - this is a very exclusive set of cards that could power this rig. You're looking at 6GB Titans and 8GB Radeons. You need cards of this magnitude because even though you're going for multiple cards, they still act individually when processing, they just happen to take it in turns when pushing the data out to your screens. They don't gang up and work as a single card, if they did we'd all be using, and recommending, multiple lower-end cards instead of single high-end cards.

Power supply - You're looking at either a 1kW+ or a pair of 600W+ power supplies.
