for my first gaming PC i want to get a good budget CPU which is why i'm planing on getting the new Pentium G3258. But i'm not sure if i should get it because more games are using quad cores than dual cores now. so should i get a Pentium or save my money and get an i5

Solution
if you can get the i5 i would as it is all around better but the Pentium Gs are actually really good budget processors for gaming.

Also the pentium g and i5 use the same socket so you could get the pentium G now and upgrade to i5 or i7 later when you got mo money

Well thats just not true at all. And it depends on what duel core cpu you are talking about. The Pentium you have there not really modern games require a duel core i3 at least.

Well in general sense it is true. And most duel core CPU are below average at gaming so................

Some of the best cpu's out right noe are 4 core the i5 4670k or i7 4770k which are arugeably the best it gets for gaming at the moment are both quad cores so i dont know where you people are getting your info.

depends if a game is gpu bound or cpu bound. to the op if yu have the extra funds then bump up to an i3 it has two real cores but can handle 4 threads where the chip your looking at has only has two cores. when building a gaming rig dont skimp on the gpu or the power supply. those three parts can break or make a rig. going with the intel route will if you need to be able to drop in a faster cpu if needed. your cpu in some games will hold back some of the faster gpu in some games.

True but at i7 quad core will run rings around an amd fx 8350 8 core so...

Isn't it strange that i7 4770k gets 90-100% usage in bf4? Still yeah am not right i admit but you will see in a year or two.

I hope i will see in a year or two, im ready for bigger more powerful cpus as well but as it stands right now the quad quad core intel ivy bridges and haswells are the best it gets for gaming beside maybe some ridiculous xeon.

even though the new Pentium G3258 is a beast of an overclocker, it is not ideal for gaming. Just two cores without hyperthreading is a bad idea for a gaming build....however, for that money you really cant go wrong with the G3258

Well, the new Pentium G3258 actually does quite well in new games, but it bottlenecks some of the higher end cards such as the r9 290 or 780/770.

However once overclocked it kept up with i5's. But remember that extra cores will help a lot with multitasking. With only 2 cores you'd probably start to experience lag with lot's of applications running that are working.

If you haven't decided about cpu and mobo yet I can say that an Athlon X4 750k will do just fine with any game.

Pretty much but they suffer a bit in unoptimizated games like watch dogs
