You don't need to have the HDD installed in you computer. To avoid potential issues install the SSD in your case and install windows 8 like normal. Once everything is setup up you can install your HDD too. Windows should detect it without any problems.

When you get ready to install the OS:

Have only the SSD connected (the other one can be there, justt not connected)
Verify boot order, etc
Verify ACHI mode in the BIOS
Install the OS, booting from the optical drive with the Windows install disk
Once it actually works, then reconnect the HDD

Continue....

Hey, regarding ACHI mode. I'm on an FX-8350 with a 990fxa-ud3 and I installed Windows 8 while running my sata ports as native IDE. Is there anyway to enable ACHI in bios without Windows breaking? I've heard of regestry tweaks. Or should I just reinstall Windows 8? And if I do will I notice any performanc improvements with my SSD?

I'm using a Samsung 840 evo with Sata 3.

When I installed my first PC all I did was install my HDD put windows into the optical drive and then let it install. I never went into the BIOS or anything like that. Is that somethingh only in Windows 8?

Depending on the default boot order, it may or may not boot directly from the DVD drive. Verify just to make sure.
