Headphones and 5.1 Surround Sound

I've got some new headphones and currently use 5.1 surround sound into the sound card at the back of the pc. The front headphone jack produces too much noise from the graphics card to use, so I need to plug the headphones in at the back. My problem is, when I unplug the lime input of the 5.1 (or all of the inputs for that matter) and put the headphones in, the PC just thinks the headphones are the front speakers and so any sound directed at the middle speaker, back speakers or subwoofer either come out of those or nothing at all.

I know I can go into playback devices and change it so it recognises the input as stereo instead of 5.1, but do I really have to do this every time I want to plug some headphones in and then reconfigure it as 5.1 afterwards? My audio driver appears to be Realtek and all it tells me is "You are seeing a blank page because there are no audio devices plugged into the system". Is there any way to make it so it realises these are stereo headphones without me having to tell it every time?
