Best channel for WiFi in crowded areas?

I live in a very crowded rowhouse development in the US and there is so much wifi interference that my devices are struggling to get 3mbps down when they are in the same room as the router (wired devices get 25-28mbps down). I've tried everything. I have a brand new TP-Link N750 router and I have tried most of the channels, but I think the problem is that everyone in my neighborhood has a high powered wifi router, which is causing alot of interference. When I open the network selection menu on any device, 30-40 different networks are competing with mine. What is a workaround for this? I have already wired as many devices as possible. Is there a channel that isn't commonly used that I could set mine to?

remember that the true channels are 1, 6, and 11...

If you have an android phone, get the app called Wifi Analyser and look to see which of the three is least occupied. Sometimes you are screwed. I have seen areas like yours. Not much to do about it. Can you use 5Ghz? Typically less crowded but less range.
