So I am in no way an expert when it comes to hardware, but I'm not completely useless either. I've got a 2GB 770, so I don't NEED a graphics card upgrade, because I'm just running a single 1080p monitor, but I'm going to want to upgrade in the near future.

I have heard that the GTX 880 will be extremely faster and cheaper than a 780ti, so that would be the obvious choice. But in my reading, it's heavily speculated that the 800 series will run on the 28nm architecture, while whenever the 900 series comes out that it's going to run on 20nm architecture. I know technology just keeps advancing and that you'll never be able to be on top, but my question is this: is the jump from 28nm to 20nm a significant jump? Is it worth waiting until the 900 series, or should I just get an 880 when it comes out?

(I also know that an 880 would be complete overkill on a 1080p monitor, whenever I upgrade my graphics card I would upgrade to a 1440p monitor as well.)

Solution
best way to look at at is graph it out how many $ for performance increese and if it makes a perceptible difference.
if you push your fps and monitors stay @ 60fps cool.
if you want higher refresh lcd for less demanding app.
or 4k @30-60fps but system that handles 12-30
also uncured expense upgrading the rest of the system to keep up
