I'm about to buy a graphics card for my new gaming pc and someone recommended the MSI Radeon R9 280X 3GB TWIN FROZR but I noticed it had a lot of bad ratings.
Has anyone here experienced this card's performance that can confirm it being faulty?
Should I consider a different card in that budget?
If so, can anyone suggest a particular one?

This is my current build: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Kat404/saved/Ykprxr

Thanks in advance~ :)

If the complaints are about oil leakage, then its not a problem. MSI says it has fixed this issue. The problem was with the lubricant for the fans, this lubricant with excessive heat and run-times (which happens with mining) would turn into an oil-like substance. This would then began to leak and get flung around. The substance isn't conductive and wouldn't harm components.

From the looks of those reviews, Oil leakage from the mining days is what people are complaining about. The Twin Frozr design is one of the best out there, and if you feel confident in it after this post, then go right ahead and get it. Otherwise

Yeah I was concerned about the leakage damaging the other parts, but apparently that's not a factor. Thanks for the info and reassurance. I think I'm going to stick with this one.

They seem to have higher failure rate on both their motherboards and GPU.
Sorry no first hand experience. But I have seen enough that it wouldn't be my first choice for
recommendation

I've heard their Mobos have issues, but I've never heard of their GPUs having higher failure rates than other brands. Maybe that stems off of the leakage issue? Because that effected other parts of the GPU due to cooling impacted cooling performance. It really shouldn't be an issue then.
The only major GPU brand I've heard have failure issues is Gigabyte and Asus. I know Gigabytes are pretty good cards and many people say Asus's cooler is phenomenal. So I think it really comes down to who you listen to.

Hey man i know this may be an old post but i am sooooo worried about buying the MSI R9-280X, i am wanting an R9-280X but the MSI version has noting but bad reviews of the card exploding, catching fire, fans falling off, and frying the CPU and motherboard. IS this card safe because i love the looks and there are no good reviews o it anywhere :(

Sorry about the late reply. I saw this post, but had to leave before I could respond... Then forgot about it.

Anyways I wouldn't worry about the R9 280X from MSI, but if you are really worried about it, you may want to check out some different cards. Nvidia released their new GPUs and its changed pricing for a lot of GPUs, (mostly lowering them) including the R9 290s.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html

Some R9 290s going for less than $300, doesn't get much better than that.
The GTX 970 is out now, better performance, less power consumption, only $330 for EVGA's cards (some of the best on the Nvidia side of things).

Well i changed and got the ASUS R9-280X i heard it was the best of the R9-280X series so i hope it does good. I play on a 23 inch ips 1080p single monitor and i just want to play Skyrim with RealVision ENB and i want to be able to play it at 20FPS or more and im happy.

20FPS is a really high standard. Mine is 5 on max settings....

*turns away sniffling and thinking dark thoughts about current computer*

Anyways the Asus shouldn't do you wrong, and the R9 280X will be able to do 1080p 20+fps EASILY! Enjoy the Skyrim awesomeness.
