My computer said it could not start so it gave me the option of starting the startup repair or start windows normally. Firstly I started the windows normally and it worked fine...until my computer was shut down again. I ran the startup repair(24hrs or so it took) and then it just went into a reboot cycle loop where the dell logo comes up , then the starting windows logo, then it reverts to a black screen with white mouse pointer and then it does that all again. I can't access any files or my desktop etc. I have tried pressing F8 and nothing happens and have also tried system restore but no last restores are known. I don't have the windows disc either as I only had windows XL home installed. Any other things I can try?

Ah - good old Dell. Gets featured a lot in this forum. Did they give you a Recovery disk?

Have you tried the Dell Communities forum?

Is this a pc or a laptop? What model number?

Hi thanks for the reply. Yeah this is my second dell that has died so I won't be buying them again! It's a laptop. I have tried everything the forums say (from what I can undertstand) but no solution yet! It's a laptop model no Inspiron N5010 conveniently just out of warranty!

Laptops are not made to be repaired. Dell don't provide info to help with problems.

Without a recovery disk or Windows disk, there's not much you can do.

Especially if it won't load Windows.

You can try buying a Window disk and installing it. Your drive needs to be OK though. And you'd need Windows running to do a Checkdisk to see if the drive is OK. So it's a gamble.

Can I do a check disk through the command prompt (where startup repair option is) ?
Or can I return to factory settings if all else fails?

If you can get to command prompt you ca try.

And if all else fails, do a factory reset.

Being far from computer savvy, can you tell me what I type in to check the disc in the command prompt and also how do I do a factory reset? Currently in dell data safe to try and save some files as an emergency backup- do I factory reset in there? Sorry for all the questions!

I would add the /r switch to that command to kick in the error fixer.

Should this thread be in XP? I don't think even Dell wold have put that on a laptop that only just fell out of warranty. :D

I'll move teh thread to a more relevant section if you wish.
