Hi,

My computer has been experiencing problems with the black screen of death. It used to run through the "Windows Starting" page and then turn black but would work when I force reset the computer. I then reseated the graphics card and RAM and the computer displays a black screen right from power up, not even running through the bios page. Again, on a force reset, it would function correctly (Though when I press the reset button, some fan whirs louder than normal). I then reinstalled Windows 7 and reformatted my harddrive and the same issue occurs. I cannot figure out what the issue is, but am leaning towards a GPU or power supply problem.

Please help! Thank you!

Is the cpu getting hot? Have you overclocked it?

Post your complete and detailed build.

Will it run well enough to download and run HWInfo - Sensors and post the results - usually 3 screenshots in TinyPic or similar?

I have not overclocked. The CPU temperature is what is usually has been (between 30-34 degrees C)

CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Core Q9550
RAM: 4GB
MOBO: Gigabyte EP45-UD3L
GRAPHICS CARD: Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 896MBDDR3
PSU: Corsair TX650W
HARDDRIVE: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM

HWInfo results:

Thank you for your help!

Your power supply is probably the best bit in your build. But it's playing up - the 12V line is getting to 12.429V. It needs replacing.

Everything else seems OK

Run Checkdisk

Do a virus scan.

Any error files come out of it?

Thank you for that. I assumed it was my power supply. It is strange that everything works just fine when I do a hard reset though....

I did run a disk check and virus scan and no problems arose.

Are there any other potential causes to the black screen besides the power supply?

Usually happens because the cpu is overheating. Sometimes because of a bad overclock. Quite often just because the cpu cooler hasn't been cleaned out.

Sometimes its a ram stick failure. Sometimes, bad OS drive or a corrupted gpu driver. Sometimes a virus.
