I was away from home for about a week, and when I came back my computer wouldn't turn on, it was working fine before I left. The power was unplugged while I was away, and that is really the only thing that's been different from normal.

The CMOS battery on the motherboard usually dies whenever the power is disconnected, forcing me to set the correct date/time whenever it's moved, but surely this can't cause it to not power up at all?

When connecting an ethernet cable to the board, the network activity LED lights up when the power supply is connected, though no other lights on the motherboard turns on. Pressing the power/reset buttons on the board seems to have no effect, fans don't start spinning etc.

I haven't done a paperclip test with the PSU yet, but I'll do that as soon as I'm home. I guess what I'm asking is, is it likely that the motherboard has gone bad rather than the PSU?

EDIT: Thanks to Ganon11000 for the answer, pushing the reset CMOS switch on the back panel cleared it right up!

Have you tried resetting the CMOS? (remove the button battery for 30 seconds and then try to boot the machine)

That's great. Since the CMOS Battery is constantly dying you may want to look on Amazon / eBay for a new CR2032 battery.
