Bought this HD a few weeks ago, I'm running Windows 7. The problem is that when I restart around 2 or 3 times the HD is completely unrecognised by Windows, it doesn't even show up, but when I format the hard drive in GParted and start Windows again, it recognises it fine. I've tried formatting it as NTFS and exFAT, as well as ext3 and using some ext3 for Windows program. The only thing that seems to work is formatting it as FAT32, but obviously this is impractical due to the 4GB file limit.

Seagate ST1000DM003 stops working after a few restarts.

This is a very unreliable drive as many experiences all over the web clearly demonstrate. It has also been discussed on several threads here on tom's hardware.

Can't hurt, mate. Send it back and you might get lucky and receive a functional one. But having in mind how many people have issues with them lately (I remember the times when Seagate were no.1 in reliability!) make sure you keep it backed up. At all times.
Im sure seagate offer free firmware upgrades to many drives that turned out to be faulty after some use.
The upgrade apparently fixes the issues with the drives if yours falls in the right category.
