Recover lost files after drive format and windows reinstallation?

Hello.
My mobo died yesterday so i got a new one and i had to format my C drive due to windows becoming corrupt, i did this during a windows installation i did.
and i have lost a video game i have been working on for a year, and lots of work has been put into it. would anyone possible know how i could recover this?
It was a folder on my desktop

restore from backup?

Next time, take off the files you need BEFORE you format it. You can do this by plugging your hard drive into another PC as a secondary or external drive.

There are some recovery software that may be able to pull some data. The issue is that you may have written over some of the data, which makes this way more difficult.
