Drives with MBR partition tables cannot be larger than ~2.2TB. Drives with GUID partition tables (GPT) can be much larger. It's possible that your drive was incorrectly formatted.

Are you booting off the drive?
I'm not sure how to force Windows to create a new GPT, but I know deleting all partitions does it if you're booted off the DVD in UEFI mode.
Other option is something like GParted.
