Hello!

So I plan to upgrade my PC's motherboard but I have a OEM copy of Windows 7. So I want to purchase a SSD and use the old HDD as a data drive. But the my Windows 7 partition is both my Boot and my Data partition.

Could I separate the partition into two partitions, one for booting and one for storage. This way I could clone the data onto a USB and reformat the HDD.

Or would it be easier and more efficient to Compress my user files and put it onto the USB that way?

Here's what I would do.
1) Use the OEM tool that came with your computer to create a Windows installation DVD if your computer did not come with one.
2) Unplug the HDD and connect the SSD drive into the computer.
3) Install Windows 7 on the SSD.
4) Hook the HDD up using a new SATA cable.
5) Boot up the computer and set the BIOS to boot off of the SSD not the HDD.

That would be easier than moving data around on the HDD or re-partitioning the drive. If for some reason you don't like that setup, just remove the SSD and boot off of the HDD.

The reason I suggested this instead of partitioning the drives or moving data around is that it's quicker, easier (IMO) and the odds of making a mistake are much smaller because you can always boot off of the HDD.

I forgot to say that I'm using an OEM version of windows on a home built PC. Will I still be able to do this?
